Stop chasing company culture.
Build community instead.
Why smart fleets think like small towns, not big corporations
Corporate leaders across all industries love to talk about company “culture.” The problem? Culture implies everyone works, thinks, and lives the same way. In my humble opinion, that’s a fantasy. Especially in trucking.
A driver’s world is nothing like that of a dispatcher’s. A mechanic’s day couldn’t be more different from an accountant’s. Trying to homogenize one culture across all of them isn’t just difficult: it’s a recipe for disconnection and misunderstanding.
The solution: stop chasing culture and start building a community — a place where different roles, personalities, departments and “neighborhoods” all work together toward shared success. Do that, and you won’t just keep your people: you’ll keep them happy and create a strong sense of belonging.
Think “Town” Not “Team”
Picture your fleet as a town made up of distinct neighborhoods, each with its own character. Drivers, mechanics, dispatchers, office staff — all neighbourhoods with their own rhythms and traditions. It’s like being the mayor of a small, fast-moving town, minus the ribbon-cuttings and parade floats.
Your role as a leader? Keep those neighborhoods connected and focused on a shared purpose. As the leaders of your fleet, it’s your role to create a well-expressed company purpose that everyone can unify around (this article I wrote awhile back can help you find it). Ultimately, you need to let your people be themselves. That’s how you build unity, company pride, and loyalty.
The Foundations of a Thriving Community
Every strong community is built on solid infrastructure.
- Drivers with reliable equipment and fair schedules.
- Office staff with efficient software and processes.
- Mechanics with the right tools and parts.
But community isn’t just about tools. It’s about people feeling supported.
- Representation: A “community committee” with one person from each department to ensure every voice is heard.
- Communication: Use company intranet or group chat platforms to connect locations, and allow space for lighthearted moments.
- Leadership: Respond personally to concerns. When you listen, people notice.
Support Beyond the Job
Great fleets take care of the whole person, and that often extends to neighbourhood beyond work itself.
- Family support for the spouses who keep things running at home (picture a list of pre-vetted handymen and contractors, for example.)
- Veteran programs with specialized care and resources.
- Mental and physical health benefits from hotlines to gym memberships (with the high rates of reported depression in truck drivers, this is key!)
When people feel valued everywhere, not just at work, they give more on the job. And they feel part of something bigger than themselves.
Celebrate and Connect
Strong communities create space for joy.
- Recognize wins, from safety awards to new babies.
- Make sure your facilities are comfortable and functional.
- Host events everyone can attend, even if it means holding more than one. (If the barbecue’s good enough, they might even drop by on their day off! But don’t bet the hot sauce on it.)
The Mindset Shift That Changes Everything
When you stop trying to engineer a one-size-fits-all “culture” and instead nurture a community made up of diverse neighbourhoods, something powerful happens: people feel they belong. And when they belong, they stay, they perform, and they help your business thrive.
Happy people. Happy customers. Stronger business.
