How Transco wrangled recruitment and compliance

As the Human Resources manager for Transco Freight, Bob Schultheiss joined a company on the grow. The Ontario-based specialty carrier, with its diverse fleet of tractors, straight trucks, and sprinters, had rapidly expanded its business in just a few short years. Coming aboard in May 2025, and with plenty of experience at other fleets, Schultheiss was tasked with overseeing recruitment, compliance and safety at the burgeoning fleet.

The Challenge

Transco’s success had created a nice problem to have. Not only were there more drivers to recruit, there were more compliance files to manage, too. Plus, the carrier had high personal safety standards to meet and exceed.

“This is a company that had grown very quickly in a short period of time,” Schultheiss says. “We needed to be as safe and compliant as we could, as quickly as we could.” The problem was Transco’s old system of spreadsheets was no longer up to the task. Rather than risk lost or misplaced compliance information, Transco decided to look for a better way.

The biggest thing TruckRight has done for Transco, though, is streamline its recruiting process. “We used to use paper, and paper gets lost. Now, when we bring on a new driver, we always know all the boxes are ticked.” Schultheiss says feedback from drivers has been positive, too, with many complimenting TruckRight’s user-friendly interface.

The Solution

Fortunately, Schultheiss had a software in mind that he’d already used in two previous roles: TruckRight. Knowing the huge difference it had made for other fleets, he didn’t hesitate to bring it up to Transco management. “We looked at what was needed, how to get there fairly quickly, and how to make it easier for the drivers to be compliant,” Schultheiss explains. “Spreadsheets weren’t cutting it, and other software we were using didn’t track or advise on expiries.” The Transco team looked at what TruckRight had to offer, read the glowing feedback from other fleets, and decided it was time to bring it on board.

Transco’s recruitment and compliance processes became streamlined, efficient, and easily identified issues before they became problems. More significantly, TruckRight made it possible for everyone at Transco, from leadership to the drivers, to access the information they needed quickly and easily from the same software platform.

“We have the ability to share with leadership when somebody’s been hired or terminated, and the ability to share with leadership where things stand,” Schultheiss says. “Now it’s easier to track who’s doing what, or if documents are about to expire. For the driver to upload and complete documents, for us to manage them, it’s much more efficient.” The carrier now feels it has compliance tracking under control.

In fact, TruckRight’s user-friendliness brought on an unexpected benefit: driver retention. Increased communication with drivers for everything, and not just forms and files, has helped Transco build a sense of community. “TruckRight is helping us manage each driver as something comes up, and that includes compliments and shout-outs. We get some good customer feedback, we can share it with the driver right away.” It’s helped Transco drivers feel a sense of belonging and of being part of something worthwhile.

Schultheiss’s advice to other fleets, for better recruitment and compliance? “Trust the process and allow the tools which are available to be used. TruckRight makes it easy-peasy.”
